What is an air conditioner?

An air conditioner is an electrical appliance, which is designed to cool your room and you. Unlike a conventional fan, an Alaskan Air Conditioning unit will actively reduce the air temperature.

Where can I use my portable air conditioner?

Alaskan Air Conditioners are both mobile and quick to get up and running. Our units are designed for both domestic and commercial use, as there is little installation cost and our units can be plugged into any 13 Amp socket. Whichever room in your home or offices requires cooling, you can just wheel through that room.

How does it work?

Alaskan air conditioning units work by removing the heat from a room and venting it outside, via the extraction tube. Hot air is drawn into the unit by a fan that passes the air through a cold coil, any excess humidity and heat is vented outside, whilst the cold air is forced back into the room to reduce the temperature. As the air is cooled, some moisture gets collected in the base of the evaporator coil and is then drained into the collect tray.

What air conditioner do I need for my size of room?

You will need approximately 4 BTU (British Thermal Units) per cubic foot OR 40 watts per cubic metre, to cool you room. As a guide, the Alaskan PAC-9000H-A (9000 BTU) will comfortably cool an average room size of 12 x 16 x 8 feet. Consideration should also be given to additional heat sources such as computers, printers, televisions and other electrical appliances, as well as south facing windows. 1 BTU is 0.293 watts and 1 watt is 3.412 BTU.

Do Alaskan Air Conditioners dehumidify?

Yes. All Alaskan Air Conditioning Units dehumidify the air. They do this by removing humidity (water particles) from the air, which is collected in a removable tray at the base of the unit.

Do Alaskan Air Conditioners have heaters?

Yes. Most of our portable air conditioners have a built in heater. Please check the product pages for details on specific models.

Can I extend the venting tube?

Alaskan airconditioners are fitted with optimum size extraction hose, extending this hose will reduce the efficiency of the unit. The unit should be sited close to an outside window or wall.

How often should I clean the filter?

The air filter should be kept clean and clear from obstructions and blockages. A blocked or dirty filter mesh will impair the performance of the air-conditioning unit. On average you should check the filter about once per week.

Why do air conditioners require a filter?

Filters are designed to clean the air and are useful for people who want to remove odours from the home, including pet smells, cooking smells and stale cigarette smoke. Also they remove airborne allergens including pollen, dust and bacteria. The filters work by being electrostatically charged and thus attracting allergens such as pollen, dust, smoke particles and spores.

Is the unit as powerful as it says it is?

Yes, all Alaskan air conditioners have been tested in true to life environments to ensure they fulfill our customers expectations.
